We had a bit of a different routine this weekend, I (LEP) was touring the wineries in the Finger Lakes region. You know, I actually forgot how much I liked wine due to the fact I have been drinking so much beer. It was a refreshing change for the palate to enjoy some lovely white, crisp wines. We spent time at Poplar Ridge, our favorite Redneck Chic winery. It was unfortunate to find out that the owner Dave, passed away over the winter. Every time I’ve been to that winery in the last 12 years, he was at the end of the bar, drinking champagne or wine. It was sad to find out the news, though his daughter is doing a great job. So, we hung out there, I tanked some Reisling while my wife sampled their goods. Afterwards we stopped at Catherine Valley, a new stop on our tour. We chilled there for a bit, listening to a small folk/bluegrass band called Polarus. Later on we hit our usual eatery, the Crooked Rooster, which has recently become a small microbrewery. I sampled their offerings and was very delighted by their beers, I chose their pale ale to accompany my burger. We did also have their baked wings. These things beat any fried wings hands down. Juicy and supple, the meat just fell off the bone. Their sauce is fresh and full of wonderful herbs and spices. These alone are worth the trip to Watkins Glen. Later in the evening we hit our favorite watering hole, the Seneca Lodge Bar. As always we had a fantastic time and even met up with our friends, A.A.O.O.B.B.R, they were ripping it up again in WG. It never fails, we have a great time every time we hit the Finger Lakes.
While I was sipping on fermented grapes, the Barleydine Wingman was hunting in DC. He and his family went down for the weekend and while there, he hit the barley drinks hard. Great thing is, everything he got is from a Wegmans. He has tried to explain just how fabulous their beer selection was down there, but feels he couldn’t do it justice. I would have to say this is one of the best hunts thus far. He chose a very diversified selection and found beers that neither of us have ever heard of. We have some fantastic additions to the barleycellar and be sure to watch for some great pairings.
